Come on, this is horrible!

Undersea disaster! Submarine is sent to save explorers from over-sized iridescent catfish! This was an absolutely horrible film, basically filmed by combining actors with normal, harmless tropical fish. The budget must have been incredible -- hire lackluster actors (of course, Ernest Borgnine is an exception) and buy a fish tank! If you give it a title reminiscent of Kubrick maybe people will think it's great! Plus we can tie it in with aquarium sales and pet shops! Lots of nice colors but the film was one of the worst ever...and not "fun" bad like "Manos" or "Plan Nine" -- I mean truly bad, boring, stupid, inept...the list goes on and on.

Set in rural Nebraska following the First World War, six veterans on motorcycles ride into the sleepy little town of Bingo. The locals are friendly until one of the vets beats a local kid in a drag race, after which the six are driven out of town. After coming upon a small farm, the fugitives are allowed to hide out by the two sisters who run the place. Things go smoothly until one of the vets, after smoking the locoweed growing nearby, tries to rape one of the hosts. Being part Native American, her sister decides to get revenge by casting a hex that steadily does in each of the unwelcome guests.

Bad, bad, bad...

This is a very bad and very confusing film that apparently never saw a theatrical release, and with good reason. In the early 1900s, a dirty outcast motorcycle gang (?!) on vintage WWI cycles, blows through a prairie town and riles everyone up, including two sisters who live alone on an isolated farm. The pretty "half-breed" sisters (children of a Native American mystic, or some such bs) are young, blond, dumber-than-a-box-of-sticks Acacia, and sultry, dark haired Oriole, whose facial expressions and tone of voice NEVER change, no matter what the situation; she always looks stoned, or maybe she just doesn't care. I know I didn't. At first, Oriole tries to scare the bikers off her land, then realizes there are no bullets in her rifle, shrugs and invites them to dinner. Yeah, right. Then they all smoke pot and have a good time. No, seriously, they do! It's pretty silly. Then, Gary Busey (playing Gary Busey, like he always does) tries to rape Acacia and is found dead the next morning. Do the remaining bikers leave? Gosh, that would make too much sense, now wouldn't it?

This painfully stupid film finally manages to come to an end and takes its twangy, annoying soundtrack with it. There is no plot, the acting is atrocious and the sisters spend way too much time spouting ridiculous, trying-too-hard-to-be- ominous statements in inbred-hillbilly-ese that'll either make you laugh or groan with pain. It's sooooo bad. I wouldn't wish a viewing of this film on my worst enemy.

good western spoof

as a spaghetti, collector for past 10 years, i am getting towards the more offbeat, madcap, in the genre, this spaghetti, or Italian 70s sex comedy has its moments.

director, Bruno Corbucci brother of Sergio,gives us a stooge western that i found very enjoyable, three Texas rangers join up and escort a clandestine female spy,Dr. Alice. Karin Schubert into war torn Mexico, the soundtrack, for most spaghetti collectors is an odd band of salsa,African steel drum, country western and 40s big band.

overall not one of the collect-able soundtracks, for collectors, it holds a dubious historical significance, in that it shows full frontal nudity, Karin Schubert,in a bath tub, others of note are Black killer, Apache woman basically not for those expecting a dollars,or dtango more of a trinity,George Eastman seems only to have a bit part which was strange as he had starred in quite a few at the time.

The Best Amicus By Far!!!

I throughly enjoyed this film when i saw it at Frightfest in London last May. I think it is the best of the Amicus portmanteaus by far and it is a shame that more people cannot see it.

The stories are all strong and feature an excellent cast (David Warner, Ian Ogilvie and Peter Cushing with a northern accent). The Ian Carmichael one is very comic thanks to magnificent Madame Orloff - it is is like "Jerry and Margot from the Good Life meet a nasty spirit" or something. The others are genuinely chilling and there is an especially nice twist in the story featuring Ian Bannen and the scary scary Angela Pleasance.

Recommended to anyone with a love of classic horror.

A wild necrophile ride!

This truly exemplary vomit of unbound euro-weirdness is rendered in living, lurid colour by fiendishly tasteless director Manuel Cano who's knack for nut-ball visuals is given ample room in his grimy opus 'The Swamp of The Ravens'. While there are many references to Edgar Allan Poe the film owes a huge debt to H.P Lovecraft's immortal short story 'Re- Animator'. (There are also a few similarities to Stuart Gordon's landmark film; especially in the way the 're-brained' awaken in such a full-voiced fashion!) Much like Lovecraft's grimpen tale, the disgraced medic continues his debased experiments with circumventing the finality of brain death, and perfecting his troublesome elixir death, in a suitably Gothic locale; a moldering, cadaver-infested swamp seemingly overrun with these truly gross-looking Raven / vulture hybrids constantly shrieking as if at the brink of death themselves. The morbid and suitably weird psychedelic pan-pipe soundtrack by Joaquin Torres doing much to increase the already monumental levels of brain-tweaking oddness! (There is this one wildly incongruous montage featuring a series of especially malefic-looking stillborn babies in jaundiced pickle jars which is in delightfully bad taste!) 'The Swamp of The Ravens' is delirious, psychotronic madness that should appease the gibbering necrophile that lurks deep inside all of our murky synaptic folds!

Powerful & sleazy kung fu drama

From the first frame of "The Delinquent" it is obvious that this angry film is very unlike the pretty, stylish films known to come from the Shaw Bros, and director Chang Cheh. Artificial sets are done away with, in favor of real location shooting. The film captures the attention from the beginning, with close up shots of mouths, shoving greasy food in and chewing like wild dogs. The neighborhood is made up of cut throat thugs, and the landscape resembles a maximum security prison with it's dismal concrete buildings. Wang Chung, in a rare turn as the main character, is great as the young martial arts protégé, living with his hard-working father, after his mother has left them both. John Shen (Chung), frustrated with a life of poverty, is seduced by fast cars, expensive clothes and beautiful women, when a gang boss offers to hire him for his martial arts skills. A plan to rob the business where is father is security guard, goes wrong, and all hell breaks loose. 'Street Gangs..' is a very grim and serious film about betrayal and redemption and a lot of it is downright depressing. Ti Lu is excellent in the role of Shen's hardened, but decent father, and the cast is all around fine. Loaded with amazing camera work and artistic touches, this one is very unique within the genre. This isn't really a 'kung fu flick,' but rather a serious crime-drama with martial arts included. Even the English dubbing is done well, very seriously this time, although I would like to see it with the original Mandarin language track someday. Great, nihilistic film, and the last fifteen minutes has to be seen to be believed; if you are looking for a light kung fu flick with bad dubbing and silly scenarios, look elsewhere; "Street Gangs of Hong Kong" is not exactly light viewing...

slap stick with nudity

When I was young I still remember that at some theatres throughout the city you could watch a new hype coming from Germany, the Tiroler comedy sex flicks. Back then they were very popular but due that popularity they were shot very quickly and so it destroyed itself.

Nowadays Europeans still are fund of those flicks and even overseas exploitation geeks are searching those flicks. Attending forums I see that those flicks go for hard cash even as most of them only exist on VHS. Some time ago 4 of those flicks came out on DVD in a box. But again, as soon as they appeared as soon as they were gone. And again, hard cash is paid worldwide to get their hands on that particular box. I was lucky to catch that box in excellent condition in a popular shop.

Don't think you will have a laugh or that it is all erotic. It's just about having sex all the time and that in funny situations. Most of them took place in Austria in Tirol, so that explains the name. Girls walking around with short skirts and no underwear. Full blossom girls showing their pride to old men. You know what you will get. The girls itself are the real thing, no fake breasts, normal bodies you know, they all look like the girl next door.

And everybody is doing it with everybody, typical seventies when there was still no AIDS. I was surprised that it is still watchable and did survive the time. Be warned, they aren't porn flicks even as they were shown in such theatres back then.

Before I go, just listen to the soundtrack!! And remember, it's early seventies, hairy butts and full bush girls.

Political Exploitation Movie

This curious little film is clearly based on the life story of Evita Peron, despite renaming the characters and despite making the usual disclaimer that the story is entirely fictious. The film is a strange hybrid between political drama and exploitation film; Metzger even prepped up a sex scene with a couple of close-to-hardcore inserts with body doubles.

The most striking characteristic of the film is perhaps the hypocrisy of the Marina Pinares character, playing publicly a squeaky clean do-gooder while she is privately prepared to use sex and murder to get to and stay at the top. Christiane Krüger remarkably manages to make this appear believable. I find it hard to think about any other actress who would have been suitable for the role.

Marsha Mason packs a wallop in first star-making dramatic role

Actress Marsha Mason had only two film credits to her name when after much television work and an unforgettable Roxanne in the tv CYRANO DE BERGERAC, she gave an intense dramatic performance in CINDERELLA LIBERTY and won both audiences and stardom, as well as a Golden Globe Best Actress Award and an Oscar nomination. Her Maggie is all emotion, both tender and explosive. She runs the gamut and gives an exceptional performance. James Caan works well with her and balances Maggie's raw yet vital persona with his characterization of John Baggs, understated and calm. The twist in the story gives him not what he wants but what he needs and in that sense is true to life. An enjoyable adult drama that still holds up.

early Scorsese masterpiece

Mean Streets was a brilliant early film by Martin Scorsese. It was his first ever collaboration with Robert DeNiro. Their very successful partnership has produced some of the best movies ever made: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino. It also helped launch Harvey Keitel to stardom.

Keitel as Charlie and DeNiro as Johnny Boy deliver great performances. Scorsese's direction is strong. Even close to 30 years ago, these three men show the talent which would eventually place them among the very best in the business. Scorsese uses a great selection of popular music in Mean Streets and that has become a trademark of his.

Mean Streets easily ranks with Scorsese's best. 9/10

Deliriously anarchic crime drama

The focus of this highly engaging second installment is Kin'ya Kitaoji's "Shoji Yamanaka" character, a brooding, shy, impulsive man who places the highest premium on his love for his boss's niece, a humble, passionate woman who vows to wait for him when he is incarcerated for a series of brutal murders.

The political machinations of the yakuza world provide bloody, non-stop thrills in this deliriously anarchic crime drama that is never less than fascinating for its attention to personal details and vivid pictorial exploration of a criminal, country-wide hornet's nest.

Despite the impressive performance of Sonny Chiba as an ultra-psychotic "torpedo" and the weighty presence of Bunta Sagawara (who takes a back seat in this episode), the film does belong to Fukomoto. His turn as Yamanaka is extraordinary and he makes us empathize with the character. Fukasaku's handling of the romance is deft and touching without ever becoming cloying.

Once again, the action sequences are brutal and unforgiving and the camera-work by Sadaji Yoshida is, at times, mesmerizing. The film's final twenty minutes, where Yamanaka is hunted in the rainy laneways of Hiroshima, are quite beautiful.

A plaudit should also go to composer Toshiaki Tsushima who delivers a driving, organic, highly memorable score.

Another triumph.

an excellent movie

Namak Haraam is about two friends and how gradually social status comes in between them but they remain friends and sacrifice for each other. This Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie had some excellent music by R D Burman. Whereas in Anand, Amitabh had a small role here he has a parallel role against the Super Star Rajesh Khanna and both have done their role well. Amitabh has a loud role as against the soft role of Superstar and thus Amitabh got noticed in the movie. This is the second and last time that Rajesh and Amitabh acted in a movie ever. However, the movie is a classic epic and tale of two friends which is a must see for both Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan fans and here they will be able to make out what Super Star Rajesh Khanna was all about - the best emotional and romantic hero in India ever.

Stylish espionage thriller...neat location photography...

From start to finish, this is one stylish espionage thriller that qualifies among the best of its genre. Handsomely photographed in some colorful European locations and impressively acted by the entire cast, it showcases EDWARD FOX as "The Jackal" in a performance of smooth villainy that is convincing all the way.

The film's final thirty minutes are worth waiting for--as is The Jackal's final disguise that convinces the French authorities to let him pass. Fred Zinnemann keeps it all moving at a steady pace and there's never any letdown in suspense since the film has the power to draw you in from the start.

Based on Frederick Forsyth's best-seller about the painful preparations an assassin makes in an attempt to take the life of Charles DeGaulle, it belongs in the same class with a film like THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, almost documentary in approach.

The British cast is excellent with Michael Lonsdale doing an outstanding job as the relentless detective. Highly recommended.

S10 Reviews: The Candy Snatchers (1973)

S10 Rating: * * * * / * * * * * The Candy Snatchers is an interesting sort of film. On the surface is looks a bit like a standard movie-of-the-week thriller. It has 70's photography, 70's woka-woka music and so on. But the Candy Snatchers turns out to be a rather clever exploitation drama with a clever script. Three thugs hatch a foolproof scheme to get a briefcase full of diamonds by kidnapping a young schoolgirl and holding her for ransom. But the plan goes south when some unforeseen wrinkles appear. Even though the Candy Snatchers has a conventional feel to it the film is far from it. The director manages to make some good tension with the twists and turns of the thieves and Candy's plight. The acting is above average for this type of film. The thieves all have interesting personalities and most characters generate sympathy for them. The Candy Snatchers is a rare 70's treat that will satisfy exploitation fans and thriller fans alike.

Rocky Horror Inspiration

If Richard O'Brien, writer of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show", wasn't inspired to write his movie after seeing "Horror Hospital" I'd be very surprised. So many similar subjects: sexually active couple in old castle/mansion, leather clad bikers, gore, evil doctor, brain manipulated minions. Even the couple's arrival is almost a carbon copy of Brad and Janet's greeting by Riff Raff who is in this case a freaky dwarf (pc - little person). This movie was released in 73' which would have been just a year before he began the songs for his soon to be musical "Rock(y) Horror Show." This is a must see for any RHPS fans.

Sex is overrated

Sex is overrated.

This movie perfectly portrays how women and men use sex as a weapon against each other. They have explicit love lives with many other people. It is a well thought out movie that teaches you a lesson that sex is not to be taken lightly. I think that this should be shown to all high school kids to teach them that when you endure sex with another person, you are taking on a huge responsibility. Carmine Caridi is sensational along with his costar Andrew Duncan. This movie is well thought out and the plot keeps you jumping out of your seat every minute. It has a twisted and unforgiving ending which leaves you saying WOW. I would suggest going to your local video store and renting it today.
