Excellent comedy

It is many years ago that I saw this film, but I still remember it as one of the best comedies I ever saw. Mireille Darc is a very attractive heroin of this turbulent, light hearted vaudeville, masterfully directed by George Lautner.

Hard to describe without angry sentences

This film, Eine Armee Gretchen (1973) by the European trash/sleaze/soft porn _producer_ king Erwin C. Dietrich is among those very few grade Z films that really make feel angry for many reasons. Firstly, the whole sub-genre of exploitation, nazsploitation, is very repellent and something that should not be used as a theme in entertainment, I really think. It is so easy to exploit something that makes beasts curious, why else there would be pictures of real deaths, suicides and so on on the Internet, for example? From nature comes many dangerous instincts that are the more dangerous, the more the animal in question has "intelligence" and ability to calculate.

The most notorious, perhaps, of all Nazi atrocity garbage films is Canadian Don Edmond's Ilsa - She Wolf of the SS from 1974 that includes graphic violence, torture and laughable cinema but also spawned many sequels and rip-offs that started to exploit the original exploitation.

What makes especially Dietrich's piece of world's most boring 96 minutes of celluloid among the most unspeakably painful experiences in my life is that it doesn't even try to present the nazis as evil and destructive, it presenents them only to have another reason for a new sex scenes which the film is full of (surprisingly, the film is practically goreless unlike the other films of the genre, but that fits well to the career of its director). Naturally the film's status is so low that criticism like this is pretty useless: there's nothing in the film that the most untalented amateur group could not have made.

Another thing is that no matter how tolerant I am towards trash and B cinema, this goes way under all the categories in its level of braindead. It has no plot or any dramatic moments to make it at least marginally interesting for a second, the acting is not acting, only reading lines in front of the camera, the scenes are ridiculous (the final battle in green grass with tanks must be seen if you thought your home video was bad) and the editing done in 2 seconds with garden scissors. All these make those 96 minutes feel like an eternal death alive, and since it underestimates the viewer so pathetically, this is among the exploitation (usually revenge themed) turkeys that are without any, absolutely, any merits. Not even a single frame is interesting, visually or dramatically. The Swiss DVD was released for some reason, think twice do you really want to pay many Euros for it (fortunately I got mine in trade for some junk!)

In 1925, in Germany, Fritz Haarmann is a homosexual, thief and sneak, having a special license from the police. He sells meat in the black market. He also kills boys and young men, drinking their blood, quarter-sewing their bodies and throwing away the parts in a river. Certainly what he sells in the black market is human meat.

Deeply disturbing horror/drama masterpiece

Back in the early 70's, when his name wasn't yet a synonym for insufferably crappy hand-held camera horror stuff, Ulli Lommel actually was quite the promising and visionary young (barely 29 years old) director in his home country Germany. The powerful impact of "The Tenderness of Wolves" alone is already more than enough evidence to back up this statement. This is a thoroughly unsettling and disturbing drama/horror hybrid based on the true facts in the case of one of the most notorious European criminal figures of the previous century. Fritz Haarmann was a German pedophile and serial killer of young adolescent males during the Interbellum period and made nearly 30 victims in only five years of time. Haarmann makes his money by trades food and goods on the black market that he himself falsely confiscated by pretending to be a policeman. This is also how he picks up young lads in the train station and lures them to his apartment loft. Uncle Fritz probes for homeless boys and eventually murders them by biting their throats; which gave him the nickname "The Vampire of Hanover". The atrocities became even more inhuman when Fritz, together with his lover/partner-in-crime Hans Grans, sold the hacked up flesh of the victims on the black market. "The Tenderness of Wolves" is definitely not an overly graphical or tasteless film, but the subject matter is sickening and the whole portrayal of pedophilia is beyond disturbing. Haarmann pretty openly declares his affection for young boys and his entire surrounding either deliberately ignores this or even considers it to be the most common thing in the world. Only his neighbor from the apartment below suspects his psychopathic tendencies and attempts to alert the authorities, but that fails as Haarmann actually had connections with the police where he worked as a "rat".

The sequences in which Haarmann is intimate with his victims are extremely discomforting, but at the same time they make the film all the more powerful and hauntingly realistic. It seems unthinkable in this modern day and age, but it was so easy for twisted perverts to pick up unsuspecting and youthful victims. Especially in times of poverty and despair, like the case in Germany between the two World Wars. Every time Haarmann comes near a boy, you can already assume the poor kid's fate is sealed, like the runaway drifter at the railway station or the boy at the carnival. Whenever he approaches a kid, your skin is guaranteed to crawl, because his voice is so stern and despicable. "The Tenderness of Wolves" also benefices from a more than decent re-creation of the depressing era and – of course – the incredibly brilliant and courageous performance of lead actor/writer Kurt Raab. He truly depicts Fritz Haarmann exactly like an emotionless and depraved monster ought to be depicted. This certainly isn't a film that is suitable for all tastes (and even the most hardened cult fanatics need to feel in a certain state of mind to watch it), but it's undeniably a unique experience and easily one of the top five most unpleasant yet fascinating things I ever watched. Moreover, after witnessing the unforgettable tour-de-force accomplishment that is "The Tenderness of Wolves", it's all the more difficult to accept that Ulli Lommel is nowadays directing junk entitled "Zombie Nation", "Diary of a Cannibal" or "BTK Killer".

Uninspired waste of Alan Arbus

Substantially an exploitation flick, this production appears to have been shot on two-tracks with some decent actors such as Alan Arbus shoe-horned into a cheap vehicle to parade comely, yet vapid and monotonic, young women in tight nurses' uniforms.

Apparently, no one told the real talent this when their scenes were filmed.

I caught this on cable with half an eyes in 1987 at my ex's while she was filling me in on family matters, little more than a background distraction to our conversation, until an uncredited Robert Urich walked on as a sleepy intern, half-hiding his face from the camera. I presume he cottoned to the semi-porn nature of the project and reduced his exposure and potential for ridicule.

Who knows? Maybe it led to his casting in the TV-series "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" later that year.

Except for that curiosity value, this film is a pass. Bus tours through Ohio are more exhilarating.

One of The More Funny Slashers

Scream Bloody Murder is quite an interesting film. Interesting in that it has zero logic and is quite humorous. If you can prepare yourself for a really bad movie you could easily enjoy this movie.

The movie starts with a young boy named Matthew and his Father working on the farm. Matthew decides for no reason whatsoever that his Father would look better dead. So, he jumps into a tractor and runs his Father over. After he kills his Father he jumps off of the movie tractor and has his hand crushed by one of the wheels. Matthew is sent to a psychiatric hospital and has to have a hook placed where his hand was. Matthew is released years later and returns home to find that his Mother has remarried and has moved on with her life. Well, Matthew doesn't like this very much and kills his Mother and her new Husband. From here on in Matthew leaves town and starts somewhat of a killing spree until he meets with a prostitute named Vera. He kidnaps Vera and forces her to do whatever he wants. Until the climax of the film, what will happen?

This is truly one of those movies that needs to be seen to be believed. It is quite off the wall and ridiculous at times. The first half of the movie is great as you should get quite a laugh out of it. The second half of the film is a little bit slow, but has a great ending. Look for a very early appearance from Angus Scrimm from the Phantasm series. 6/10

Watch at your own peril

This is not an official French "Emmanuelle" film, nor is it an unofficial "Emanuelle" ("Black Emanuelle") Italian copycat from the series created by Albertino Bitti and Joe D'Amato; it is a Franco film all the way with the title slapped on only as an afterthought. Unfortunately though, it's just not a very good Franco film. It's really a murder mystery where the main character, an unhappily married pianist (alternately called both Barbara and Emanuelle) is found dead at the bottom of a cliff at the very beginning of the movie--a victim of either suicide or murder--and it's up to her shrink (Jack Taylor) and sister-in-law (Lina Romay)to investigate.

Truth be told, I was drawn to this movie by some tantalizing stills of Lina Romay wearing some very 70's-style sunglasses (and pretty much nothing else), the version I saw of this movie though was pretty skimpy on the nude scenes of both Romay and another equally beautiful Franco regular, Alice Arno. There were only some lesbian scenes between Romay and the more obscure lead actress who played "Barbara/Emanuelle", but they were pretty obscure in a different sense--I could barely make them out. I suspect this problem will be taken care of when, like pretty much the entire Franco back catalogue, this movie gets an official DVD release. A more permanent problem is that it simply does not have a very compelling plot and it seems to be a pretty lackluster effort by Franco and everyone else involved. It's better than the execrable WIP films Franco and Romay made right after, but definitely a step down from the interesting stuff Franco was doing in the late 60's and early 70's. See it if you've got a sunglasses (or Lina Romay) fetish, but for everyone else, watch it at your own peril.

"Walk softly and carry a big stick."

Unfortunately the IMDb allows only comments up to 1000 words and I was so much taken in by WALKING TALL that my comment got longer, so please go to my entry in the message board, if you want to read the whole review! :-) ... :-))

I love movies with balls and brains and this is one of 'em! :-)

OK, I know this movies has its small shortcomings, because it does not belong to the category of over-financed Hollywood-junk (which is a movie-category established by the film industry (!) in the later 80ies and beginning 90ties consisting of movies costing anywhere from 50 to 200 million bucks and which look like most designer-stuff: well crafted but hollow), but to the category of a small independently financed B-picture. Don't get me wrong, this ain't a movie financed on a shoestring-budget, this is just one of those movies, where the producers did not have million's to burn. It's very decently made and 95% perfect, just here or there you think, well, they could have tried one more take or something similar. But anyway, are you going to the cinema to see a technically perfect movie and receive joy from seeing designer-tailored action-scenes, or do you go to the movies or buy a DVD to enjoy yourself with a movie full of balls and brain? If you belong to the 1st category, I suggest you save the time reading this and forget about watching this flick.

But if you belong to the later category, then this is something for you, you gonna enjoy this roller-coaster-flick! Especially if - as is the case with me - 70ies B-flicks are your cup of tea. They certainly are mine! I won't dwell here on the storyline of WALKING TALL (you can find details elsewhere here), it's probably enough to point out that the title is the program and that our hero's tag-line is "walk softly and carry a big stick" (or - as the old Latins said - "suaviter in modo, fortiter in re"). Yeah, that's what he does and he uses that big stick to clean house very properly.

I do not know, which part of the story is actually "fact" (based on incidents in the life of Buford Pusser) and which parts are fiction (that could be a lot, since the disclaimer reads that this picture is based on "incidents suggested by the life of BP", which sounds like something, but in fact can mean nearly everything or nothing at all), but IF just 50% of the story-line happened in some way or another, this guy must have had enormous luck and 7 lives. Already the incidents, when somebody tries to kill him, amount to at least 5!

The movie is quite brutal, at least for a flick made in the middle of the 70ies. Quite a lot of dead and quite a high number of severely beaten-up bodies, but there ain't that much of it on-screen. Just the first beating of our hero is really tense and was probably only outdone by Mel Gibson's Christ a couple decades later. Of course it looks a bit unrealistic to see Joe Don Baker in a T-shirt so soaked with blood, because anyone loosing that much of it would certainly be dead, but then again Phil Karlson had a point to make and wanted to make sure we'd get it: our hero had been severely wounded by the villains of the town and now he had a task to handle, do what a man has to do, simply WALK TALL!

This movie is pure 70ies magnetism, a wonderful ride into rural Americana, with so many classic (partly stereo-)types, wonderful original characters, hardly any cardboard ones, and actors indeed looking like someone you could meet at any corner of such a town. This is what lifts such classic productions over the Hollywood-product we get today: we do see real people doing things, that could at least be possible (while when we watch Die Hard IV everybody should know that 90% of the action-scenes there could simply never happen, because they are against the laws of physics). Here you got a lot of beat-ups, car-chases, shoot-outs, more beatings, cars driving in houses, all things that normally don't happen if the police does its job, but things that COULD happen, that are physically possible.

And they are staged with zest and verve by a veteran director in the twilight of his career, who took this job at the age of 66 and wanted to give it a last (which then was his penultimate) try. And he does deliver ALL the goods, pulls all triggers. He certainly knew this could very well be his last effort, so why not give the best. With 4 decades (!!) of movie-making experience, Phil Karlson (who also directed THE SILENCERS and THE WRECKING CREW-entries in the lovely Matt Helm-series and quite a couple very good noir's and western) certainly knew how to build up a good storyline and how to stage it as well as possible with whatever budget he had available.

...

ATTENTION ! This comment here is NOT COMPLETE, because the IMDb allows only 1000 words and I wrote more, so please go to my entry in the message board (if you liked to read my few cents) to get the whole review and to be able to comment on it! :-)

Review :

A muddled mix of colonialism and homosexuality

When a woman found shot to death in an Ethiopian hotel room turns out to be a young man, flashbacks during an impromptu inquest reveal the reasons...

The savagery of colonialism and the stigma of homosexuality are inexplicably juxtaposed by a director who seems to know very little about either and the result is an uneasy mix of exploitation elements and pseudo-psychological Sturm und Drang. AFRIKA opens with a soldier mutilating a woman's breasts with a lit cigarette before shooting her in the groin with a machine gun at the roadside checkpoint Professor Philip Stone (Ivano Staccioli) is stopped at on his way to a rendezvous with a woman who was once Frank (Andrea Traqlia), his male secretary. The professor took the teen in after he was viciously gang-raped by his coed classmates and Stone's wife (Maria Pia Luzi, Cavallone's real life spouse), when not making a play for Frank, is trying to rekindle a masochistic romance with her husband who begins to feel he has more in common with his charge. Meanwhile, after his mother disowns him, the boy's sister Jeanne (Kara Donati) tries to break the budding relationship up after her husband took matters into his own hands by arranging the rape. All of this goes nowhere -as does a bizarre sight-seeing safari organized by Stone's friends who show off their superiority to the natives with cutting remarks like "Africa's black because it's dirty" and wondering if the villager breast-feeding her baby is giving it cappuccino as an ox is slaughtered for their feast. It's rather odd to see a lot of "Africa Addio" in a movie ostensibly about the parallel identity crises of a young homosexual and his middle-aged mentor but stranger still, the female nudity and softcore coupling are all of a heterosexual nature. The bisexual Stone was a closet painter and the gay, of course, composes poetry and thinks a sex change will solve everything so, while the premise of a sexual awakening in a savage, primitive land held promise, the ignorance of its subject matter makes for a very muddled movie that borrows most of its depressing denouement from THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? The gay theme would surely have been an unpopular one in Italian film at the time so why AFRIKA was even made is a bit of a mystery -especially so since Cavallone was quoted as saying that if he knew Staccioli was homosexual beforehand, he never would have used him. Filmed on location in Ethiopia during a regime change, the cast and crew were jailed for ten days during a violent uprising and that's too bad because the resulting footage obviously would have found its way into the film as well. Often palmed off as a giallo, fans of obscure Eurotrash will no doubt want to check it out but the appellation is misleading and the scratchy, faded print now in circulation is missing about a half hour -a blessing, reely.

More a romantic story than nunsploitation

This film did not have the typical features of a usual nunsploitation film. Sure, it had nudity and a whipping, but the sex was all off camera.

Eleonora Giorgi played Carmela, who was promised as an infant to unite two families. She fell in love with another and her father locked her away in a convent. Giorgi was really good in the role and made the film worth watching.

Sister Elisabetta (Catherine Spaak) assisted her in meeting her lover while in the convent. Spaak was also very good. Unfortunataly, Sister's motives were not just to befriend Carmela; she was actually in love with her. Spurned, she took revenge.

Also good was Suzy Kendall who played Mother Superior. She was also in love with Carmel, but never really expressed it.

Just watching this film as a romance is worthwhile. You'll have to look elsewhere for real nunsploitation.

Questioning your belief system

It is somewhat strange that some of the best British films of all time are not very well known outside movie-buff-dom. The Wicker Man is certainly one of them (another is Get Carter).

The Wicker Man is not just technically very well made, with an excellent cast, a glorious cinematography and a gripping script, it goes beyond that. It is one of those rare treats that manage to question your belief system. It lures you into a foreign system of beliefs, it seduces you into sympathising with an act that is - legally speaking - a murder.

It is impossible to categorize the film into a genre. Some have described it as a horror film, which in a strict sense is completely wrong as there are no shock elements here, no gore whatsoever, and just one killing; but in a more relaxed sense this is not such a bad characterisation after all, because the film uses the language of horror films, e.g. permanently hinting at that something mysterious and horrific is going on. Similarly flawed are characterisations as a fantasy film (nothing supernatural) or sci-fi (no science), but the film takes a little bit each from the flavour of these genres.

A good date movie?

While I can't really rave about this move, I also certainly can't say it wasn't interesting. On one hand, it is a typical "poliziani", a hard-boiled and violent Italian crime thriller about Mafia criminals and corrupt or vigilante police, but on the other hand, it is also a women's picture featuring no-clothes-horse Edwige Fenech in one of her more dramatic (as opposed to hysterical) roles.

Fenech plays Anna a young, naive provincial woman who falls in love with a brutal and abusive gangster who, at the behest of his godfather (top-billed Richard Conte)involves her first in smuggling then in prostitution. She tries to leave the life after her mobster hubby goes to prison. She gives birth to a son and falls in love with a respectable doctor, but of course her past soon catches up to her.

This is a rather schizophrenic movie. It is has the typical violence of a poliziani, and Fenech performs her usual quota of nude/sex scenes (the most interesting scene though features not Fenech, but a bizarre stripping clown--that's right, a clown). The ending though is incredibly sappy and tear-jerking. I can't imagine anyone who liked the early part of the movie liking the end and vice versa. I suppose it could be a good date movie for women who want to see Fenech emote and men who want to see Fenech undress (it beats the hell out of a Renee Zellweger romantic comedy, anyway).

Small film with certain qualities

Obscure film set in the mountains of West Virginia. The movie centres on four strange people, all wanting different things out of life and each other. The quality of the movie is what lets it down, because the acting is quite brilliant, especially from Martin Sheen and Davey Davidson. They share some great one on one scenes together and develop a sense of atmosphere and meaning to the whole film. The intentions of such a small scale film it means well.

Review :

Remake of a 1931 film which should never have been made.

Trader Horn was first made in 1931. I haven't seen the original, but the critics and audiences seemed to like it, perhaps because it was one of the earliest talkies. This remake is an embarrassment, a 1970s production which feels like it was made before 1931, so simple and idiotic is its storyline. The back projection shots are pitifully obvious and make it all too clear that this production never got anywhere near Africa. There are plenty of cliches that you would associate with jungle adventures (a steamy love triangle, natural hazards, villainous colonial Germans, stampedes, quicksand, etc), but none of them count for very much since the performances are so indifferent and the script just ambles by in search of a moment of interest. I kept expecting Tarazan to leap out from behind a bush at any moment but he didn't..... he was the only thing missing from this jungle fiasco.

Review :

Why the Italian army can be so funny.

The director of this movie Mario Monicelli, who made movies and wrote scripts for more than 65 years, gives us an insight into Italian politics by presenting this satire of an attempt of a coup d'état by some fascist officers. This script was written by Agenore Incrocci who wrote more than 100 scripts and who worked practically as long as Monicelli. The state pensioners of the glorious war sing their old songs as if Mussolini was still alive. They do not understand that their actions will be considered as pranks. However Italian politicians can turn the events into their favour and at least democracy will be saved in a rather crumbly way. The Italian officers act like in an Italian opera without singers. They have their gatherings as in good old times and they think they should reverse the fragile Italian democracy. At the end they will succeed but things do not happen as they had foreseen... This movie is a brilliant comedy about the way of life of the Italians and their politics seen through the eye-glass of a director who lived through it in experiences from his youth.
