One of the best exploitation films ever

Excellently filmed, directed, and written. One of the best action films of the 70s, equally as sadistic as any Italian or German "S and M" movies. Scenes of black man being tied and dragged by car make a modern audience VERY uncomfortable! Pam Grier shows it all! I dig the scene with her and the leather chick with the junky girlfriend. Jack Hill should be praised for bringing us the gem of a movie!

This Is Truly Awful

"Awful" is not a word I use often to describe a movie. There's usually some redeeming quality that at least raises it to the level of just plain "bad." "Awful" is the word here, though. Chuck Conners stars as the leader of a band of ex-Confederate soldiers who find themselves caught in the middle of a South American civil war in 1870. Aside from the last 10 minutes or so there's precious little action or adventure here, and there's a lot of just plain dumbness. Ike (Aron Kincaid) falls head over heels in love with a girl he meets for 5 minutes at a local monastery (true!) and at one point brings a guitar playing buddy of his to the monastery to serenade her while the nuns look on! Then he spends the rest of the movie gazing forlornly into the distance with puppy-dog like eyes. Meanwhile, Hansen (Conners) becomes a sort of protector/lover to a gypsy girl whose own people have cut off one of her ears. Aside from Conners and Cesar Romero as the leader of the town of San Carlos we have here largely unknown actors (unsurprising, since how would they get anyone to cast them in anything significant after this disaster?) 1/10

Little pieces about Chile

When "Palomita Blanca" was shown in Chilean theaters, a lot of people felt disappointed because this movie has "no story". Anyway, this movie is a fresh and humoristic portrait of Chilean society in the 70s. A lot of situations depicted with humour become, I think, part of the best of Chilean cinematography, making fun about political dogmas and social differences (Chile is a very class-distinction country). "Palomita Blanca" was shot in 1973, but the military strike stopped the editing process. It was shown at first time in Chile in the beginning of the 90s.

When Lynn begins killing a number of men who remind her of her dead father, Zambrini helps her out by disposing of the bodies to the pigs. What a bucket of slop!

After a pre-credit sequence which takes a principled stand against childhood sexual abuse by showing an older adult male's hand feeling up the bottom of a voluptuous and very mature-looking "teenager", this movie gets right down to business with it's two chief exploitative elements--sex, of course, and pigs (which is what this movie was originally called). The plot revolves around two psychos--a sexually active young woman (apparently the grown-up version of the "teenager" from the pre-credit sequence) who murders her many male conquests, and her elderly partner-in-crime, a pig farmer who feeds the bodies to his porkers. This movie thus is basically a rural version of Mantis in Lace with the LSD sequences replaced by surreal footage of rampaging pigs. Still it should be admired for its sheer audacity and its bizarre and ludicrous plot (it's totally original if nothing else). It also manages to shoe-horn in one of the most hypocritical feminist themes this side of I Spit on Your Grave. What a bucket of slop!

I can't shoot anyone, I'm a man of God now!

(There are spoilers) Rushed sequel to "Black Caesar" that was released the same year that it's predecessor premiered in 1973. "Hell up in Harlem" takes up where "Black Caesar" ended with Black Godfather Tommy Gibbs,Fred Williamson, staggering through the streets of New York with a bullet in his gut courtesy of the NYPD and corrupt New York City District Attorney DiAngelo, Gerald Gordon. Saved by his dad Big Papa Gibbs, Julius Harris, and a group of local homeboys Tommy, no longer limping like he did in "Black Caesar", is nursed back to health and before you can say Jackie Robinson is back in action to take out those, gangsters and law men, who tried to do him in.

Extremely violent and far more rousing then "Black Caesar" the film "Hell up in Harlem" has a WWII-like commando sequence with Tommy and friends storming ashore a Mafia held island, like US Marines or Navy Seals. After taking out what looked like an entire battalion of Mafia soldiers Tommies commandos force the remaining head Mafioso's to eat a full plate of "Soul Food" and make a peace settlement with Tommy's gang. There's also a graphically sick and nauseating lynching scene in the movie and what has to be the longest chase sequence in motion picture history; 3,000 miles from NYC to L.A.

Tommy back in the saddle again as Harlem mob kingpin expands his gangster empire to Philidelphia Detroit and L.A. What turns out to be the biggest threat to his power is, like in almost all Godfather-like films, are those close to him. Having the goods on DiAngelo and the corrupt politicians and big wigs in NYC, with the secret ledgers that he stole in "Black Caesar", the local power brokers in and out of the city's government don't prosecute or kill Tommy. Instead try to get to him through his top enforcer Zack, Tony King. Zack murders Tommy's ex Helen, Gloria Hendry, and makes it look like it was sanctioned by his dad Big Papa Gibbs.

Tommy in a fit of fury quits as mob boss and throws the organization that he founded into the hands of Big Papa who ends up doing a better job running it then Tommy did. Going legit and moving to L.A Tommy later gets the bad news that his dad was killed by Zack, who took over the Gibbs Harlem rackets. In a fit of rage Tommy goes back home to NYC to get even but it's not only Zack that he has to deal with but D.A DiAngelo and the entire NYPD as well.

Too vicious and violent even for a gangster film "Hell up in Harlem" has really no one in it to cheer on or feel sympathy for with the exception of Helen and Tommy's wife the Bible reading and church going Sister Jennifer, Mrgaret Avery, and Tommy and Helen's young son Jason.

"Hell up in Harlem" starts off with the last ten minutes or so of the movie "Black Caesar" which makes you think, if you already saw "Black Caesar", that you've already seen it before and turn the film off. Were told at the end of the movie that Tommy disappeared, together with his young son, and was never seen or heard from again but he did re-appear, of sorts, as Willie a Tommy Gibbs-type mobster a year later in the movie "Crazy Joe".

Hidden Gem!

I bought this film from a car boot sale in Finland (Yes, this wonderful film was apparently released in Finland as a rental in the early eighties.) mainly because of its cover that suggested that it would be a blaxploitation film. That it was not. Instead it proved to be a genuinely stylish piece of cinema with some upsetting (exploitation) scenes not unlike Texas Chainsaw or The Last House on the Left. Probably, though it was not violent enough to compete with them or sick enough to challenge Pink Flamingos. So it was never recognized and quickly forgotten. Anyhow, the thing that surprised me the most was that this film looked stunningly good. The compositions were beautiful as was the lightning. The story was fast paced and had enough twists to keep me interested till the end.

Sadly, however, there is one big minus to this film; it seems to me, that the filmmaker(s) were a bit too conscious with the "shocking" content of their script. Whenever an event with shock value occurs it is highlighted in the worst "look, we dare show this"- manner.

All in all a very enjoyable piece of trash with a difference- competence in filmmaking!

P.S. If you still have doubts after reading this I must say that any film that has both Shelley Winters and Slim Pickens cannot be nothing but good!

It's 1912 and the patrons of 'The Last Chance Saloon' have gathered for their evening of whiskey to contemplate their lost faith and dreams, when Hickey (Lee Marvin) arrives. Hickey is out to convince everyone that he can help them all find peace of mind by ridding them of the foolish dreams and by bringing them back to reality. Hickey is working especially hard on Larry Slade (Robert Ryan) a former anarchist who has lost his will for life and is awaiting the eventuality of death. Larry is not affected by the cajolings of Hickey but his young companion Parritt (Jeff Bridges) is strangely affected and this leads to revelations about his own mother and feelings of betrayal and loss. As the night wears on the mood changes as everyone has the their faith and dreams slowly destroyed by Hickey. As the anger builds everyone turns on Hickey about his wife and the iceman. This leads to more revelations and with Hickey having the faint questioning of his own new found convictions.

Can I tell you that I have waited 30 years to see this movie? When I was in my late teens, I received a brochure in the mail advertising the American Film Theater series. One of the films in the series that made my eyes pop was the promise to show Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh". I was a big fan of O'Neill's work, but felt cheated by AFT's disastrous marketing concept of showing it's films to season subscribers only, and then only giving them two days to see the film. I was forced to take a pass, but mourned my loss ever since.

This play is rarely performed. At four hours, it would task most theater companies, and Hickey's 25 minute soliloquy in the last act requires only the best actors to pull off. I was fortunate to have seen this play, once in my life, performed on the stage. This was Chicago's Goodman Theater production starring Brian Dennehy as Hickey in 1990. I felt fortunate, but came away from that production dissatisfied. Dennehy was a "good" Hickey, but not a great one, and the rest of the cast left me a little shallow.

How glad I was then to discover that this film had been re-released. By pure chance, I saw a notice in the paper that this film would be showing at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. I couldn't let this opportunity pass by a second time. I attended the screening and was absolutely stunned. It exceeded my expectations.

First of all, the cast was stellar. Robert Ryan played his last film role here, and it was perfect. I don't say something like that very often. I cannot imagine a better Larry.

Fredric March played his last role here too, as Harry Hope. Also an excellent performance.

The question everyone would be asking about is Hickey, played by Lee Marvin. Was he up to the role? To my surprise, Marvin couldn't have been a better choice.

Hickey was a salesman, and a rare one at that. He was the type of salesman that could knock on your door and convince you that what he had to sell was what you needed. A salesman like that had to exude a sense of complete self confidence. They would have to be totally sure of themselves and show it. Lee Marvin did that perfectly.

The tragedy of Hickey was that he was his own best customer. He was a tortured soul until he came across a solution that made him feel that he could live with himself again, thus creating his own pipedream. His mistake was to think he found a solution that would save humanity.

Unfortunately, in Harry Hope's dive, pipe-dreams and illusions were the only thing the patrons had to live for. Tampering with that created disaster.

Lee Marvin convinced me that he was Hickey, and in a play like this, that is quite an accomplishment.

By the way, I discovered that this film is now available on VHF and DVD. I am getting a copy.
